Back in the fall, we requested that you support our brothers and sisters who work in Atlantic City by booking your upcoming meetings and conferences there whenever possible. We are heartened by your response!
Several of our affiliates and community partners have stepped up and booked meeting and conference arrangements in the resort city. Some even changed their original plans and moved their events to Atlantic City in response to our request. To all of you, we extend a hearty thank you.
As you know, Atlantic City continues to face many difficult challenges. More than 8,000 of our union brothers and sisters have been laid off. The closing of multiple casinos has had a domino effect on the city: Staggering unemployment, plummeting casino tax revenue, soaring property taxes, disproportionate home foreclosures and a pressing need for social services.
The New Jersey State AFL-CIO’s annual Legislative/COPE Endorsement Conference, which is scheduled for June 16 & 17 at Caesars Atlantic City, will bring more than 600 delegates to the casino resort. We are pleased to report that so many of our affiliates have also planned to hold upcoming events in Atlantic City, including OPEIU, AFT, AFSCME, GMP, SIU, CWA, AAUW and others.
Our union brothers and sisters in Atlantic City need us now more than ever! We are heartened that so many of you have once again stepping up when it matters most!
