The New Jersey State AFL-CIO urges our brothers and sisters to join us at NJ Transit Headquarters in Newark tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. for a rally to stop mass transit fare hikes and service cuts. The Governor’s proposal to hike fares nine percent amounts to a tax increase on working families and an affront to the countless communities that heavily rely on public transit.
Your support at this rally is critical to making our voices heard. We encourage you to join with us in Newark tomorrow to show your union pride and “Fight the Hike.”

During these times of economic hardship for middle-class families, it is unconscionable to increase costs on nearly one million workers who depend on NJ Transit to commute to work every day. Families are paying higher costs across nearly every aspect of their lives, from health care to their children’s education. The imposition of steep fare increases and service cuts would make it even harder if not impossible for workers to get to their jobs.
New Jersey’s economy is extremely dependent on its transportation system, and we must do better to ensure that it is accessible and affordable. Our transportation system is one of our state’s greatest assets; it should be used to build the middle class not become a burden on the workers who depend on it for their livelihood.
