“Unions Helping Women: Women Helping Unions”

2009 Conference Information:

Friday, March 20 - Saturday, March 21, 2009

East Brunswick Hilton, East Brunswick, NJ

We are pleased to announce the Sixth Annual (WILD) Women In Leadership Development Conference to be held at the East Brunswick Hilton on Friday, March 20 through Saturday, March 21, 2009.

This year, the WILD Conference will not only draw women from New Jersey and across the nation, but we are proudly hosting an international visit of 10 union women from the United Kingdom

Change is here and WILD is ready. This Conference will continue to build for positive change, strengthen leadership skills and educate union women on the issues that are paramount to us as trade unionists; the economy, changes in the workplace in the laws, and full equality.

WILD provides union women with an opportunity to strategize and network with people that are models of achievement and have first hand experience of women’s issues. Union women benefit immensely from their participation at WILD and will simultaneously gain more knowledge and experience to become effective union members and leaders.

Each year the New Jersey State AFL-CIO Sponsor a Women in Leadership Development (WILD) Conference which is held at the Rutgers Labor Center. The goal of the WILD Conference is to address the broad question of how unions help women and how women help unions.

The WILD Conference is also designed to ensure that union women have every opportunity to be educated, develop leadership skills, and build diversity within the labor movement. Attendees at the Annual WILD Conferences meet and talk with union leaders, organizers, educators, and authors, who share the challenges they face and their strategies for advocating for and organizing workers.

The Conference is always held in March in honor of Women’s History Month, and begins on Friday night with guest speakers and a dinner reception for networking. Workshops, panel discussions, and a keynote speaker continue on Saturday. Topics that have been addressed by the WILD Conference include:

Effective Organizing                                          Employee Free Choice Act

A Non-Traditional Approach to Careers           Mobilizing around Women’s Health Issues

Social Security and Work                                 Women in the Building Trade

COPE and GOTV Strategies                           Kentucky River Decision
