2012 is the Year for Passage of a Higher Education Construction Bond Referendum
On January 23, 2012, several college and university Presidents were asked to testify before the Senate Higher Education Committee regarding their most pressing issues, and many of them expressed a strong desire for the passage of a higher education construction bond referendum. In 2011, the New Jersey State AFL-CIO announced its support for this and testified before legislative committees on the matter. We continue to urge legislators to move forward with enabling legislation to place this issue on the ballot in 2012.
Many colleges and universities are eager to move forward with ambitious capital improvements, but these plans are contingent upon the passage of such a referendum.
This referendum would result in significant jobs creation, especially during our current period of high unemployment. It will also provide a positive long term economic impact on regional job growth, support future college campus expansions and educate our workforce.
This referendum provides an opportunity to modernize our campus facilities and create a learning environment that will increase student academic achievement, aid faculty and aid the communities in which the facilities are located. It will contribute to making these facilities ones that we can be proud of and that will help them compete with other institutions throughout the nation.
