Legislation Closing Prevailing Wage Loopholes Signed into Law
The New Jersey State AFL-CIO thanks the Corzine Administration and Acting Governor Codey for signing two pieces of Prevailing Wage legislation into law on April 26, 2007. The bill signing ceremony took place at the Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Commissioner Socolow said “This legislation…. provides the Department with stronger tools to protect the wages of the men and women who build our vital infrastructure.” The bills were:
A-3890 (Egan / Van Drew / Moriarty / Huttle / Greenstein) & S-2457 (Doria): The bill clarifies that the Prevailing Wage must be paid on projects being constructed on publicly owned land. The bill passed the State Assembly on February 22, 2007 by a vote of 61-13. Voting in favor were all Democrats present and 15 Republicans. To view the vote, please CLICK HERE. In the Senate, the bill passed on March 12, 2007 by a vote of 31-6-3. To view the vote, CLICK HERE. The bill is now on Governor Corzine’s desk.
S-2458 (Madden) & A-3889 (Egan / Van Drew / Scalera / Cohen): These bills would establish penalties for debarred contractors from using new business entities to circumvent prevailing wage laws in order to continue bidding on public contracts. The laws are the product of a collaborative lobbying effort, led by building trade unions and including contract associations, as well as the bills sponsors, which resulted in this victory for working families.
