James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act Signed Into Law

Both the House and Senate passed the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act today, marking what will probably be the last major action of the 111th Congress. President Obama signed the bill into law on Sunday, January 2, 2011. The New Jersey State AFL-CIO applauds the bill’s passage and thanks the members of our Congressional delegation for their unanimous support. We recognize in particular, Congressman Frank Pallone, whose work as Chairman of the Health Subcommittee was integral to the passage of this bill.

Once enacted, this legislation will provide essential health care services to first responders, area workers, nearby residents, and others who were sickened as a result of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Many people, who took it upon themselves to aid in the rescue efforts at the World Trade Center, were made ill by airborne debris. These heroic individuals deserve the best medical attention which our country can provide. The 9/11 health bill, which was named in honor of New York City Police Department Detective James Zadroga, will ensure that those with illnesses related to the terrorist attacks get the health care they need, when they need it. Zadroga was a first responder who died from a respiratory illness related to his efforts at Ground Zero.

President Obama signed the bill into law, giving many first responders and their families a renewed sense of security during these difficult times and hope for the future.
