14th Annual Labor Candidate School Focuses on Campaign Essentials and Labor’s Core Values
The New Jersey State AFL-CIO hosted the 14th Annual Labor Candidates School from Saturday to Sunday, August 14-15, 2010. This year’s class had 25 students representing 19 different local unions. The course covered an array of topics including campaign planning, volunteer recruitment, fundraising, message development, voter targeting, and utilizing the press, just to name a few.
Additionally, this year’s program placed a special focus on recognizing the core values of the labor movement. Students discussed the broad question of what it means to be in a union as well as the question: “what is a union?” Students also had a chance to learn and better understand different sectors of the labor movement by talking with one another during two lunchtime roundtable discussions.
The New Jersey State AFL-CIO congratulates the class of 2010, and we sincerely thank our affiliates for their generous contributions year after year to our COPE program. Without these funds the continued success of the labor candidates program would not be possible. The labor candidates program has helped bring about 608 election victories for rank-and-file union members since 1997.
