Court Rejects Governor Christie’s Executive Order on Union Political Contributions
On May 7, 2010, a State Appeals Court rejected Governor Christie’s Executive Order #7 that sought to restrict certain types of political contributions from unions. Union attorneys argued in the case that the Executive Order violated union member’s First Amendment rights. The court held that such a policy would have to be implemented through the legislative process, not via Executive Order.
The ruling is a victory for union members who want to participate in the political process.
The court’s ruling will take effect July 1, 2010, allowing for potential review by the Supreme Court.
