3rd Annual Organizing Institute: Trains Diverse Group of Union Organizers

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO 3rd Annual Organizing Institute (OI) was filled to capacity with 21 students participating in the three-day program from Friday, April 9, – Sunday, April 11, 2010, at the Rutgers University Inn and Conference Center. Over the weekend, students from nine different local unions learned from six experienced teaching fellows.

During the program, teachers presented students with various scenarios helping them learn how to think like union organizers and run a successful organizing campaign. The program featured small class sizes and workshops so that teachers could dedicate significant time and effort to each student. The OI allows our union brothers and sisters to develop a command over basic organizing skills and be ready to hit-the-ground-running for their next organizing drive.

Although it is important to work towards labor law reforms such as the Employee Free Choice Act, which would make it easier for workers to organize, it is equally essential to continue our organizing efforts under the current laws. By organizing workers, we can build our power as a labor movement, and by building the labor movement, we can restore our state and country’s middle class.

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO thanks all of this year’s students, teachers, and union sponsors who generously volunteered their time to make the program a resounding success.
