NLRB Recess Appointments Mark Major Victory for Organizing

On Saturday, March 27, 2010, President Barack Obama filled two vacancies on the five-member National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Craig Becker, an accomplished lawyer and lifelong defender of workers’ rights, was one of these appointments. The national AFL-CIO strongly backed Becker and recognizes the White House appointments as a major victory for organizing and the labor movement.

Thanks to your hard work and calls to the White House, workers can once again have an NLRB that protects employees from unfair labor practices and upholds the right of workers to organize. The NLRB now has a 3-1 democratic majority and from this point forward workers will be able to take difficult cases to the Board with the confidence that justice will be served.

Craig Becker and Mark Pearce both were all installed as recess appointments and they will serve until the end of next year. However, if the Senate chooses to confirm the appointments, the members will then serve the standard five-year term. The NLRB is responsible for administering the National Labor Relations Act, conducting union elections, and deciding cases between unions and employers.
