“James Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act” Released by Congressional Subcommittee

Yesterday the House Energy & Commerce Health Subcommittee hearing was held in Washington D.C. on H.R. 847, the “James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.”  The New Jersey State AFL-CIO has been a strong proponent of this legislation on behalf of 9/11 workers who have become ill due to hazardous exposures during their rescue efforts.  The bill was released from Committee by a vote of 25-8, mostly along party lines with all Democrats present voting yes.  Eight Republicans present voted no and three voted in favor.

We commend Congressman Frank Pallone (D-6), Chairman of the Subcommittee, for his leadership on this issue.  Congressman Pallone has been a strong advocate of helping 9/11 workers and their families, and we are appreciative of his efforts on this legislation.

The health implications of the 9/11 disaster were both immediate and long-term, affecting thousands of Ground Zero responders, including police, firemen, health care workers and construction workers. The federal response to these health emergencies has been inadequate. The bill seeks to remedy this by providing medical monitoring and treatment programs for WTC responders.

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO thanks members of the subcommittee that supported the legislation and we will continue to lobby for passage of the legislation by the House of Representatives.  If you have any questions or require additional information, please contact us at (609) 989-8730.
