The New Jersey State AFL-CIO Celebrates Black History Month

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO takes great pride in commemorating February as Black History Month, a time for all of us to reflect and educate each other on the rich and powerful history of African Americans. As we celebrate together, it is important to remember that Black History Month is as much about the future as it is about the past – that by looking into the past we can make sure that our country sees a brighter future in terms of social equality.

We are thankful for the civil rights movement and those that pursued a dream against immeasurable hardship. As a result of countless brave leaders and generations of dedicated individuals our country grew stronger and more united.

Less than two years ago the people of this country achieved the milestone of electing Barack Obama as the first African American President of the United States. More recently, Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver because the first woman to serve as Speaker for the New Jersey State General Assembly. These elections confirm that we live in an era where prejudice can no longer deter us from our shared goal of building a better state and nation for the next generation.

By looking back at the legacy of African Americans, we understand how far we have come together and that no challenge is too great to overcome. This is the spirit we need to get our country back on track and restore the middle class. Black History Month instills in us the will to forge ahead.
