The New Jersey State AFL-CIO joins the New Jersey Workplace Blood Donor Coalition
The labor movement in New Jersey has a proud and distinguished history of community service. Union members are the heart and soul of New Jersey and unions have always played a critical role in responding to community needs. Many of you may be aware of the fact that New Jersey has for some time and continues to face a critical and severe shortage of blood. To prevent a crisis in the state’s blood supply, the New Jersey Workplace Blood Donor Coalition, a partnership of public and private sector New Jersey employers, labor and business organizations, is asking New Jersey employers and organizations to work together to double the number of people who routinely donate blood in New Jersey. The Coalition is sponsoring a statewide blood donation campaign called “Save 3 Lives…All in a Day’s Work.” The Save 3 Lives theme focuses on the fact that giving a pint of blood – the standard for blood donations – may save up to three lives. Together, we can save lives…all in a day’s work.
Many of you have long-standing traditions of organizing blood drives and asking your members to donate blood on a regular basis. We would like to take a moment and acknowledge and applaud your commitment to this very important cause. Your continued commitment is a testament to everything that makes New Jersey a proud union state. For those of you who have not organized blood drives within your organizations, we strongly encourage you to consider hosting a blood drive.
Over the next few weeks, you will be hearing more about our campaign plans and the importance of being a regular blood donor. Please join your union brothers and sisters in helping to ensure that New Jersey’s blood supplies are able to meet the needs of all our citizens.
The New Jersey State AFL-CIO is stepping up to the challenge and will host a Union Blood Drive in partnership with the Middlesex County Central Labor Council and IBEW Local 456 on Thursday, January 28, 2010. We strongly encourage you to participate in this important campaign by recruiting your members to call (609) 989-8289 and register for the blood drive on January 28, 2010, or to organize your own local/union blood drive. For more information on the campaign, you can visit the Save 3 Lives campaign website at www.njsave3lives.com.
