New Jersey State AFL-CIO Offers Endorsements in 2007 Legislative Contests

Delegates to New Jersey State AFL-CIO COPE Endorsement Conference Offer Endorsements in Legislative Races and Pledge Support to forty-two Rank-and-File Labor Candidates.

ATLANTIC CITY- Following their two-day COPE Endorsement Conference in Atlantic City, the New Jersey State AFL-CIO announced their endorsed candidates seeking election to the New Jersey Legislature in November and released a list of more than 40 rank-and-file union members seeking public office with the support of the highly successful labor candidates program. Over 600 delegates representing 1,000 unions and 1 million union members in New Jersey participated in the endorsement process.

"The strength of the New Jersey State AFL-CIO's political program is evident every day in the halls of government as elected officials that we have supported continue to put forward public policies which further our goal of improving the lives of our State’s working families," stated Charles Wowkanech, President of the New Jersey State AFL-CIO. "With issues such as health care reform, school construction and continued property tax reform set to dominate the next session of the New Jersey Legislature, never has empowering union voters to participate in elections for the State Senate and General Assembly been more critical."

Other highlights of the two-day conference included the New Jersey State AFL-CIO's annual labor awards reception which this year recognized Senator Loretta Weinberg (D-37), Ray Pocino, Vice President and Eastern Regional Manager, Laborers' International Union of North America and J. Fletcher Creamer, Jr., CEO, J. Fletcher Creamer & Son, Inc. for their continued support of working families; keynote addresses by Governor Jon Corzine and Ed Hill, President of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW); and appearances by Elizabeth Bunn, Secretary-Treasurer of the United Auto Workers (UAW) and Edward McElroy, President of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) who spoke on behalf of more than 4,000 new workers who recently gained a voice at work.
