Vice President Joe Biden’s Speech Embodies the Heart of the New Jersey Labor Movement

The October 6-7, 2009, New Jersey State AFL-CIO Legislative/COPE Conference was not short on incredible speakers by any stretch of the imagination. Vice President Joe Biden, Governor Jon Corzine, Lieutenant Governor candidate and State Senator Loretta Weinberg, newly elected AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Elizabeth Shuler, and EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson were among a few of the distinguished leaders that joined over 500 union affiliates at the Borgata Hotel in Atlantic City.

While the Legislative Conference was a time to celebrate our unity as a labor movement and enjoy a few nights in the company of our union brothers and sisters, it was also a time to realize the challenges that lie ahead of us. There are now 26 days until Election Day, and if one thing is clear from our time together, it is that we are ready to rise to the challenge of re-electing Governor Jon Corzine on November 3rd.

Everyone at the conference agreed that organized labor will be the determining factor in this election, but it will take an all-out and coordinated effort from union members across the state. There are a record number of 68 labor candidates on the ballot this year, and our voices will be heard. As the Vice President said we must ensure the wellbeing of our families, and working together, we are going to show just what 1.2 million union votes can accomplish on Election Day.

“Yes We Can – Again! On November 3, 2009.”
