Registered Nurses Win Representation with HPAE/AFT at Newton Hospital
About 280 Registered Nurses (RNs) at Newton Hospital in Newton, New Jersey won union representation with HPAE/AFT on Thursday, August 13, 2009, after fending off several delays instigated by their employer. The RNs initially voted to join HPAE/AFT on Friday, May 15, 2009, but the vote was immediately challenged by management based on the fact that many of the RNs were supervisors. The RNs ended up losing as a result of the employer’s challenge and lost yet again after appealing the decision twice. However, after the NLRB counted the ballots on August 13, 2009, the RNs were finally able to celebrate a well deserved election victory by a margin of 130 Yes votes to 120 No votes. We congratulate the Registered Nurses on their outstanding organizing victory and thank all of our brothers and sisters that assisted in facilitating this victory.
