Endorsement Conference Energizes and Unifies New Jersey Labor Movement for 2009 Election
The New Jersey State AFL-CIO held its Legislative/COPE Endorsement Conference from June 16-17, 2009 at the Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. Not only was there an astounding turnout of over 600 labor delegates, but the conference itself was run with the type of style and efficiency that can only be expected of the New Jersey labor movement. Many key endorsements were made including a unanimous vote to support Governor Jon Corzine in his bid for reelection and a pledge to support AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Richard Trumka running for the national AFL-CIO Presidency.
The two day conference gave labor delegates representing 1000 statewide local unions and over one million union members the chance to exercise their voice in the endorsement process. Endorsements were offered in the 2009 State Assembly races as well as in one of two special State Senate elections. A record number of 64 labor candidates will be running in 2009 election to date. The labor candidates program has helped elect 551 union members to public office and it is a testament to the New Jersey labor movement’s dedication to ensuring that the voice of working families are heard in our state.
