2009 Organizing Institute Sees Incredible Turnout

The 2009 Organizing Institute (OI) saw an incredible turnout with forty-six students and nine teaching fellows filling the halls and classrooms of the Rutgers University Inn and Conference Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The OI training was held from April 24-26, 2009 giving participants a chance to immerse themselves and learn about the essentials of union organizing. The three day program included instruction on one-on-one communication skills; how to move workers to take action; leadership identification; and the elements of an organizing campaign.

The OI was created in 1989 to promote and foster union organizing. Since then, the OI developed a program to recruit and train a new generation of union organizers and has trained thousands of members and others who are committed to building power for working people all across this country.

With the growing possibility of passing the Employee Free Choice Act, it is essential for our union brothers and sisters to possess a command over basic organizing skills. By holding trainings such as the OI, we can develop the knowledge and expertise workers will need to revitalize the labor movement and middle class through organizing.

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO thanks all those students, teachers, and union sponsors that were essential to making this year’s Organizing Institute such a success.
