Governor Phil Murphy delivered his first State of the State address today in Trenton, outlining plans to improve the financial security of working families in New Jersey.
Since taking office a year ago, Governor Murphy has made tremendous progress in building a stronger and fairer New Jersey, with vital investments in education, infrastructure, and our economy to grow and protect our middle class. He has also signed measures requiring paid sick leave and another calling for equal pay regardless of gender. However, the Governor admits, there is still much more work to be done as several big-ticket items, such as a $15 minimum wage, remain stalled.
The Governor’s top priorities for 2019 include passing a $15 minimum wage as well as creating a more responsible and sustainable tax incentive program. He also plans to increase funding for public education, infrastructure—including the Gateway tunnel—and NJ Transit, thereby creating thousands of good-paying union jobs.
The New Jersey State AFL-CIO supports Governor Murphy’s progressive agenda and we look forward to working with him as we endeavor to strengthen communities and improve the quality of life for all working families.
