New Jersey State AFL-CIO President Charles Wowkanech issued the following statement on Senate President Steve Sweeney’s and Sen. Jim Whelan’s Atlantic City fiscal stability legislation, which was introduced to help the ailing city and its residents recover from high unemployment and skyrocketing taxes as a result of multiple casino closings:
“As the devastating consequences of Atlantic City’s multiple casino closings show, we need a comprehensive effort to help the city and its residents bounce back,” said Wowkanech. “Stabilizing the city’s finances and continuing to provide casino workers basic benefits that raise their standard of living are the types of relief found in this legislation that the city and its residents so desperately need. Atlantic City has been one of the strongest economic engines for the South Jersey region as well as for our great state and we must do everything possible to ensure its long-term viability.”
The legislative package cleared the Senate Budget Committee on Monday, December 8th.
