The latest debacle in Washington threatens to hit workers in the wallet with House leadership seeking to undermine federal overtime rules. The bill – misleadingly called the “Working Families Flexibility Act” (H.R. 1180) – offers working people a false choice between time off and money.

This bill would mean that employers could choose to give working people time off instead of paying them the required “time and a half” for overtime hours worked. It’s important to realize that under this law, workers would take home less money. The challenge workers face these days is not having too little time off, its needing more money to pay the bills. Any bill that results in reduced income for working families is one that should be opposed.
No matter how much House leadership dresses it up with language about “flexibility” and “choice,” this legislation comes down to one thing: longer hours for less pay.
